    UJIMA Foundation, Inc receives Award for Excellence in Diversity

    Shown left to right is Leontyne Johnson, President, and Delores Hawkins, Executive Director of UJIMA Foundation, Inc, of Glen Burnie, MD., Gloria Jetter, Regional Director of the American Cancer Society, Cathy Olson, Crofton, MD and Debbie Russell, Community Specialist/Cancer Control of the American Cancer Society, Gambrills office.

    UJIMA Foundation, Inc received the award for excellence in diversity at the 2005 Awards Reception, November 4, 2005, Hunt Valley Marriott, Hunt Valley, Maryland.
    UJIMA Foundation, Inc is working to increase awareness of the benefits of early detection in the African American, Hispanic, Korean and American Indian communities. In addition to the grassroots community outreach, UJIMA Foundation, Inc hosts a cable access show, The UJIMA Melting Pot, where they air informational programs of common community interest. The programs feature guest speakers, a diverse panel and a live audience and have talked about various forms of cancers, methods of detection, treatment & prevention; the role of the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging & issues concerning senior citizens; Identity theft & fraud; Emergency preparedness in the State of Maryland in the aftermath of hurricanes; and local community projects.

    Cathy Olson received the Sunrise Award for outstanding Service for her work with the “Look Good Feel Better” program.

 August 6, 2005.

    Ujima’s Executive Director Delores Hawkins did a presentation at the Afrolistic Barber Shop for Prostrate Cancer on August 6th. The presentation was given while customers were actually getting their haircuts. She incorporated the men into the presentation by having them talk to each other about some of the educational materials she passed out. The men were very receptive. The importance of knowing your family history was one of the points that stimulated vocal interaction among the group

 July 27, 2005.

    Ujima’s Executive Director Delores Hawkins did a presentation for the Korean seniors at the Brooklyn Park Senior Center on July 27th at 10:15. She had an interpreter because she can't speak Korean or understand it. Delores talked about Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer. Everyone was very receptive and asked many questions. She was invited to come back in Sept. to talk to their English speaking members.
