Maryland Gazette Article SERVING THE COMMUNITY It has been roughly a year since the Ujima Foundation was formed in Anne Arundel County by longtime community activists Leontyne Johnson and Delores Hawkins. Ujima, or collective work and responsibility, is one of the seven principles celebrated during the African-American cultural holiday Kwanzaa. The women picked the word, derived from Swahili, because they thought it fit their goal of helping unite cultures and communities. (Read more)
